LOSTU and NCTU both joined a large and diverse group of stakeholders in opposing a recent attempt by the town of Beech Mountain to reclassify the Watauga River so they could withdraw up to 2 million-gallons/day during times of drought.  The coalition of anglers, paddlers, conservationists, farmers, businesses and concerned citizens was led by the Watauga River-keeper and turned out by the hundreds at last night’s Watauga county commission meeting.  The Commission heard their voices and the request for reclassification was opposed 5-0.    The result will hopefully now motivate Beech Mountain to address substantial wastage their aging system which has given them one of the highest per/capita usage rates in the state.
