Protect, Reconnect and Restore are the cornerstone principles of TU’s conservation strategy.  We at LOSTU do all three, but lately there has been considerable emphasis on reconnecting native Brook Trout habitat in our region.  This is usually done through the removal of barriers, like poorly designed culverts, that prevent Brookies (and other aquatic organisms) from moving freely up and down their watersheds.  Above is the “after” picture of a project we supported for the last three years on Mill Station Creek in the Pisgah National Forest.  Below are the “before” and  “during” photos.  This is one of 5 projects completed recently in our area, reconnecting over 13 linear miles of habitat.  If you’re a  6″ Brookie, that’s a lot of new room to roam!  Thank you to all who have supported our fund raising efforts and made this possible.  By partnering with the National Forest Service and others who care,  we can make a difference!
