Kids’ Fishing Day
Each year LOS TU members join the USFS in making Kid’s Fishing Day a success by cooking hundreds of hot dogs to feed the hungry gathering of kids and parents at Lake Powhatan the first Saturday in June. On Friday before the big event, we provide children with disabilities from Transylvania and Henderson counties schools the opportunity to enjoy fishing.
The fishing event gives kids with learning and physical disabilities the chance to be mentored, one-on-one, and experience the joy of fishing and the great outdoors.
Saturday is the Forest Service’s annual Kids Fishing Day at Lake Powhatan, a free fishing event for all children ages 12 years and younger. The event allows families and friends to share fun, quality time together while learning about one of our nation’s favorite pastimes – fishing. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission co-sponsors the event.
The WNC Muskie Club provides free fishing assistance and loaned equipment, Hyder’s Kountry Kubbard provides live bait, and the Land O’Sky Trout Unlimited chapter cooks and serves refreshments. The two-day fishing event is conducted as part of National Fishing and Boating Week, during which local events occur in communities across the country.
