Trout Unlimited believes that protecting all native trout species and the cold water habitats they live in is of special importance.

At the Land O’ Sky Trout Unlimited Chapter, here in Asheville, NC, we are lucky enough to live in an amazing location to help with one of those iconic native trout species – the Appalachian Brook Trout.

Why is it so important to protect these little trout?

  • Biodiversity Conservation: Native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are a unique and iconic species of fish in the United States. Protecting their habitat ensures the preservation of this valuable component of the country’s natural heritage. Brook trout have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in specific environments, and their conservation helps maintain biodiversity and ecological balance in freshwater ecosystems.
  • Ecosystem Health: Brook trout serve as an indicator species, meaning their presence or absence can reflect the overall health of their habitat. These fish require clean, cold, and well-oxygenated water to survive. By safeguarding their habitat, we are also protecting the overall quality of the aquatic ecosystem, including other species that rely on the same environmental conditions.
  • Recreational Opportunities: Brook trout are highly sought after by anglers for their sporting qualities and unique beauty. Their protection ensures the availability of recreational fishing opportunities for both local communities and tourists. Fishing for brook trout supports local economies through tourism, tackle shops, guide services, and related businesses, contributing to job creation and economic development.
  • Cultural and Historical Significance: Native brook trout have deep cultural and historical importance in many regions of the United States. They have been a part of the heritage and traditions of indigenous peoples and early settlers for centuries. Protecting their habitat helps preserve these cultural connections and ensures that future generations can continue to enjoy and appreciate the historical significance of brook trout.
Lets do what we all can to leave things better than you found them.  With the broader environmental goal of doing our best to preserve as much of our natural resources for future generations to enjoy as possible, the brook trout and the amazing habitats that they live is a challenge worth working hard on.  You only have to take one or two trips into the deep, dark creeks and streams that these fish live to appreciate that these habitats and these little fish are worth all of our efforts to keep them healthy and alive for our children’s children to enjoy.
